We are trained social scientists and know that the success of a research, evaluation or training project depends on the quality of contact established with stakeholders. We are very aware of the vast influences cultural (and gender) difference can have on human interactions: why are we doing this, who benefits. Our approach has always been to treat ‘disturbances’ in an intercultural context as invitations first of all to take a break and find out a little more about the issues which are probably behind it. We have always found that our enthusiasm to learn about other people and how they see their lives was the biggest help in establishing good working relationships.
